Family Center Construction Update

When will construction begin?
Construction started August 17, 2010

When will construction be completed?
All construction is scheduled to be complete in late Spring of 2011.

Will membership rates be affected?
As services increase based on our family center expansion, rates will be adjusted. We are planning to support our members and community with the construction rate until the Family Center is completed. All members will be notified of any changes.

Will our Group Exercise classes and other programs be affected?
The group exercise room will be relocated to a temporary location in October and then to its permanent location when the expansion is finished. We will continue to add group exercise classes as the usage demands and our Family Center grows.

Will we lose Racquetball Courts?
In September, we will be converting 3 of the 5 racquetball courts leaving 2 courts available for our members. In October and November, there will be 1 racquetball court available, however; we have made arrangements for members to use Walter C. Young courts during this time. In December, both courts will re-open for member's use.

What happens to Child Watch?
Child Watch will move 2 times before it settles into its new home. Staff will help to assure that each of our moves is safe, fun, interactive and exciting for the children. A focus group will be established to support and help plan these events and to design our new Child Watch Center.

How will members know what is going on?
Our Family Center will have a construction zone messaging board by the front gymnasium entrance. This will be updated weekly. We will also send emails to keep all of our members informed. If we do NOT have your current email, please give it to our member services staff.

What can we expect when the project is completed?
We are excited to be supported by the city's expansion of this Family Center from 25,000 sq ft to 42,000 sq ft. including:

  • Senior/Multi-Purpose Center for programs, classes, seminars, socials, intergenerational projects, etc.
  • Teen Center for our Teen Advisory Board, clubs, activities, leadership development & mentor programs, community service projects, etc.
  • Group Exercise Studio / Cycling Studio / Wellness Center to enhance and develop healthy lifestyles for all ages.
  • Child Watch Center for youth development programs & activities.
  • Family Activity Center with a 25' Rock Climbing Wall to support our commitment to youth wellness.

Will you have a Ground Breaking/ Grand Opening?
We will have a groundbreaking ceremony in the Fall and a Grand Opening in 2011 when our new Family Center is complete as well as many celebrations along the way!
